MANUAL MOBILITY: manual wheelchairs for children are
sized appropriate for them. Most are light weight and have the
adjustability necessary to achieve proper seat to floor heights, wheel position,
seat width, depth, and growth potential. Manual mobility chairs come in
two configurations, Standard configuration, and Reverse configuration The
standard configuration is where the rear wheels are larger, and are the push
wheels. The reverse configuration is where the front wheel is the larger
wheel and they are used for propulsion. The reverse configuration
works well with very small children, or larger children with postural issues,
where getting the push wheels forward allow for better contact.

For children under 21, the issue with mobility bases is GROWTH. Since
most funding sources will only fund for equipment once every five (5) years, it
is important to only provide quality products that are designed to allow for
growth, and have parts available if and when needed. Many providers use
overseas vendors, as they are cheaper to purchase; however getting parts can be
difficult. We only supply products that have a good track records, from
vendors who stand behind their equipment and stock parts. Most of the
manufacturers of pediatric products offer growth kits, sometimes free for the
first growth kit. Although these growth kits only address the change in size of
the base, it certainly helps when you have a child that grows faster than
anticipated. Sunrise Medical (QUICKIE), and Invacare (ACTION), are the two
manual wheelchair companies we stock; we believe these two manufacturers are the
leaders in seating and wheeled mobility.
In our assessments with therapists, and physicians, we try to predict the
growth pattern and select equipment that can be adjusted within those
hypothesized expectations. It is important for the consumer to find a
supplier that they trust, one that can not only order the equipment, but fit,
adjust, modify and follow up as needed.
ACTION
COMET: The chair is designed to fit event the smallest children and grow
right along with them, simply and inexpensively. A depth range of 7" to
13" is available on one frame. Or, choose the long frame for a growth range
of 9" to 16". The chairs width can be changed just as easily, from
10" to 16" on either frame length. Even the crossmembers can be moved
to accommodate almost any seating system. For smaller children, the chair may be
set up in a reverse configuration, with the larger wheels in front, and then
switched to the conventional configuration when the child is able to reach the
rear wheels-all with no additional parts required. These innovations have helped
the Comet introduce a new word to the world of pediatric chairs: simplicity.
CAN BE SWITCHED FROM STANDARD TO REVERSE CONFIGURATION.
STANDARD
CONFIGURATION:
ATION MVP, JR. Versatile, growable, and
designed with performance in mind, the Invacare MVP(TM) jr. is the premier
folding chair in the Custom Manual wheelchair line. With a refined sense of
style and three rear frame options, it's easy to match your needs-responsiveness
(curved frame), stability (square frame), or growth (extended frame). Backed by
the quality and reliability that is built into every Invacare product, the MVP
jr. gives you the durability and performance you need, setting the standard for
every folding chair in the industry. Think MVP jr. when you want maximum
versatility and performance with the convenience of a folder.
QUICKIE
GS: The ZippieŽ GS was designed to easily 'grow' without the need for new
parts. So as a child grows, the Zippie GS grows with them. The Zippie GS
provides a wide range of width, seat depth and other key positioning
adjustments. Reversible wheel configuration, an all new universal axle plate and
unique side frames add even more flexibility and stability.
QUICKIE
KIDZ: The QuickieŽ Kidz is a ridged frame wheelchair designed for use
by toddlers. With a very low seat to floor height the Kidz will keep the child
at the same level as their peers, preventing them from feeling, and being
observed as different. A tall stroller handle makes it easy for the caregiver to
push the chair without getting a sore back.
