These products are generally used by individuals who do not self propel, or have postural issues.  Generally these wheelchairs, when tilted, take the larger push wheels away from the user; requiring a caregiver to assist the wheelchair user.  The tilt in space function provides several benefits to a wheelchair sitter.  For children who sit in a wheelchair, it is critical to position them properly and monitor that position to keep from deformity, and pressure points to arise.  For individuals sitting, there is a risk of pressure, and skin integrity; as well as postural deformity that results from sitting in a poor position.

Through the use of tilt in space, we can retain the posture from the upright position; throughout the tilt position.  We can use gravity to our advantage, but tilt the user back, we can use the effects of gravity to help extend, and promote an upright posture.  For people who are kyphotic, the tilt can help reduce or correct some postures.

This disadvantage of these chairs, are they are heavier and harder to transport in standard vehicles.  They generally do not fold; however there are models that do.
