PRIVATE INSURANCE

For many individuals under 65, private insurance is common.  Private insurance carriers have PPO's and HMO's.  The PPO offers the beneficiary access to equipment within the insurance network, as well as out of network.  Out of network usually costs the beneficiary extra, however it allows them to use the specialists in their area.

HMO's offer complete coverage, however in the HME world, the HMO can leave it's beneficiaries short on experience and specialty.  HMO's contract with low cost, full line dealers who cannot afford to specialize due to the low reimbursements the HMO has set.  Many HMO's allow the beneficiary to leave the network for specialty products if they have exhausted their network provider's experience.
