Is the ramp going to be used indoors or outside? At a home or for a vehicle? Once you determine where you are going to used we can then figure how long the ramp should be to allow access over the ramp.
THE GENERAL RULE: for every inch of height (rise) the ramp should coorespond a foot in length. (ie. a 3" step would require a 3 foot ramp).
After determining the length of the ramp, we should look at the maximum weight which will be going over the ramp. (ie. Add the user's weight and the equipment being used). After determining the weight we can determine the material of the ramp.
RESIDENTIAL APPLICATIONS:
It is important when planning to add a ramp, find out from your home owner association, land lord, or city which type of ramps are permitted. Each situation may limit the options available for ramping your home. It is also important to consider when ramping an outside door, which way the door swings open. If the door swings out, then you may not be able to use a pre-fabricated lift.
BEST ADVICE: Contact your local DME to find out what lifts are available for your specific needs.
