There are both manual and power standers, some that are used only as
standers; and some that are incorporated into manual and powered
wheelchairs. Standing from a wheelchair can be beneficial for the fore
mentioned reasons; but also can improve their ability to care for them
selves. By standing and the ability to cook on the stove, less care staff
is needed; and the more independent they can become.
Standing
should only be offered when used in conjunction with a therapy program.
Standing can be very beneficial for strength, bone development, muscle and
tendon development, pressure relief, postural improvement, and reduction of
deformity. Standing can also be dangerous, when bone density is too low to
support the weight of standing.
For individuals who have never stood, there are prone and supine standers
that support some degree of weight on the individual's front side of their
bodies (prone), or back side of their bodies (supine). Depending on their
capability, or therapy goals supine or prone can be chosen. With both
standers, you can (with most brands) achieve a upright position.
