Strollers for individuals with walking impairments are critical from age 2-5. Prior to going to school, strollers are the most appropriate means of mobility. These children outgrow the baby strollers, and still need a mobility device that is supportive, therapeutic, allowing for growth, and easy to transport. In most cases these children need a stroller that offers prescriptive seating, not the sling upholstery found in baby strollers. For individuals who cannot walk, stretch, and extend their bodies; proper support, and posture are critical to maintain a life time of flexible sitting.
Individuals who are still not walking by the time they enter a structured school environment are issued a wheelchair mobility aid. These wheelchairs are usually manual (if they can self propel), tilt in space (if they need additional support and posturing), or powered (if they are cognitively able to safely and independently drive). In each of these mobility aids, it is critical to work with a Doctor, Therapist, and Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS), to select, adjust and modify a seating system for the individual's needs. It is very important to watch, make adjustments and alter the seating with the growing needs of the child. Strollers are still needed for these children, as most parents do not have a vehicle that will accommodate a manual, tilt, or powered wheelchair. The mobility aid they use a school, many times cannot be used with the family transportation; meaning if there isn't a stroller or other type of transporting wheelchair, then the child is shut in when not in school. Many strollers offer simple to complex seating for most individual's needs.
Adults too, can benefit from strollers. There are many strollers, including tilt in space models that cater to people who need positioning, and at the same time require a folding, compact device that can be transported in their vehicle. Many clients who have a powered wheelchair, also have a stroller to go to the doctor, or other outing. Even those people who have van conversions to accommodate their powered wheelchair, may have a stroller to use when they travel.
